Iconic Sesame Street Actor

Sonia Manzano is known to millions as “Maria” from Sesame Street.  She started on the classic children’s show in the 1970s, and after performing in front of the camera for 10 years, she also became a writer for the show.  She has won 15 Emmy Awards for her writing on Sesame Street and has been nominated twice as a performer.

Ms. Manzano has also done a lot of work outside of Sesame Street, too.  She has written for Little Bill on Nickelodeon.  She has starred in The Vagina Monologues and The Exonerated on the stage in New York.  And, she has published two children’s books:   No Dogs Allowed! and A Box Full Of Kittens.

Ms. Manzano has been recognized for her work by The Congressional Hispanic Caucus in Washington, D.C. and The Hispanic Heritage Foundation.  And, in 2005 she was inducted into the Bronx Hall of Fame.

Ms. Manzano is currently working on a memoir and writes a blog for Catalina magazine.
