Eli’s House sponsors a garden each year at Port Salerno Elementary School. We believe that “edible schoolyards” are a fantastic way to teach children many lessons in science, math, writing and nutrition all while providing a hands-on, physical recreational activity and an important life skill. This year the PSE garden features: radishes, tomatoes, peppers, rosemary, potatoes, carrots, and beans.
The PSE Stingray Garden is always buzzing with activity and education. Classrooms at PSE regularly incorporate the garden into their science classes and almost all of the grade levels utilize the garden by planting in their classroom, too. And, thanks to the beautiful Florida weather, the garden is usually planted 2-3 times per year.
PSE has also created an extracurricular Garden Club that is headed by Ms. Soliman and Mr. Gannon. The club meets weekly for an hour after school. The Garden Club is currently engaging in the following activities:
- The Water Conservation Poster Contest through the City of Stuart
- The Rain Barrel Decorating Contest through the City of Stuart (and when they are finished they will have a nice rain barrel to keep in the Garden to help collect and conserve water!)
- Generation Green Apple through the USGBC of South Florida for our Green Garden
- They have also teamed up with the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts to help with the butterfly garden
Ms. Soliman says of the PSE Garden: Teaching a child to garden today, is feeding them for a lifetime!
The Eli’s House PSE Garden program is also a proud member of the Edible Schoolyard Project.
The Garden Club is always looking for volunteers and gardeners to come and speak or help them out. Feel free to contact us if you are interested, and we can put you in touch!
