Eli’s House believes that a child’s parents and caregivers are the first, and most important, teachers in his or her life. We also believe that all children are capable of being smart and high achievers in school. And, we feel that children aren’t born smart, they are made smart. The groundbreaking work of the Thirty Million Words Initiative has confirmed this.
The mission of Port Salerno Talks, in partnership with our community, is to empower families to build the foundation of their child’s language to ensure future success in both academic and lifelong pursuits. To that end, Port Salerno Talks seeks to close the achievement gap between children of differing socio-economic statuses by targeting families with early intervention to provide skills to help better prepare their children for school. The goal of the intervention is two fold: 1) to educate parents regarding the critical nature of early language acquisition and 2) to present tools and strategies necessary to craft meaningful educational activities.
To help accomplish these goals, Port Salerno Talks has created an Advisory Council of the following organizations:
- Martin County School District
- Public Defender’s Office
- Children’s Services Council
- Tykes & Teens
- Whole Child Connection
- Martin County Library System
- Helping People Succeed
- Eli’s House
- Imagine Chicago
- Early Learning Coalition
The kick-off meeting of Port Salerno Talks took place January 26, 2015 at Port Salerno Elementary School, with dinner generously provided by Tutto Italiano of Stuart, FL.
