The next generation of dance
Ailey II is the second dance company of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, the New York-based dance company. Created in 1974 by Alvin Ailey, the company fosters both young dancers and choreographers and Mr. Ailey’s vision of providing training, performances and community programs for all people. Ailey II, referred to as the “next generation of dance,” is currently led by Artistic Director Troy Powell and tours around the world.
Alvin Ailey was an iconic member of the dance world and his impact cannot be underestimated. Through his company, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, he helped to popularize modern dance and revolutionized the participation of African-Americans in 20th century concert dance. He is most famous for his masterpiece, Revelations, which debuted in 1960 to international acclaim. Since then, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has performed for presidents and served as a cultural ambassador the world-over, all while contributing significant works of dance to the dance community. Before his death in 1989, Mr. Ailey won the United Nations Peace Medal, the Samuel H. Scripps American Dance Festival Award (modern dance’s greatest honor) the Kennedy Center Honor for lifetime contribution to American culture through the performing arts and many, many other distinguished awards.
