Arts in Education

Because we believe that the arts are an important part of a child’s education and should be accessible to all children, Eli’s House strives to provide a variety of exceptional artistic experiences and opportunities to the children of Port Salerno Elementary School.

This year, 2016-17, we have several exciting arts-in-education events planned for the PSE students.  First, we are thrilled to bring in Roger “Hurricane” Wilson and Phil Bildner to serve as our artists-in-residence.  Mr. Wilson will be working with the PSE students in their music classes and Mr. Bildner will be working with the fourth and fifth graders on writing.  We are also pleased to partner again with The Lyric Theatre.  The PSE students will be attending The Lyric’s Discovery Series performances for children.  The productions this year are:  USA to Z, The Nutcracker, Hans Brinker and the Quick-silver Rocket Skates, and Freedom Songs:  The Music of Black History.

In the 2015-16 school year, we brought in internationally-known artist, Patricia Greene, to serve as artist-in-residence for one week in October.  During her time at PSE, Ms. Greene provided a cultural, as well as artistic, experience for the children by working with them on a Day of the Dead-themed sculptural work.  In February, we had award-winning author Wesley King serve as a writer-in-residence with the fourth and fifth graders.

In our first year (2014-15), Eli’s House partnered with the historic Lyric Theatre of Stuart, Florida.  We did this in two ways.  First, Eli’s House treated the children of Port Salerno Elementary School to four wonderful theatrical performances through the Lyric’s Discovery Series.  And, second, we shared bookings for the Ailey II dance company and Savion Glover, who were scheduled to perform at the Lyric.  In conjunction with their Lyric performances, these artists also showcased their talents in the classrooms of Port Salerno Elementary School as visiting artists!
