2015 Was a GREAT Year!

This past year was an incredible one for Eli’s House!  We created several new programs and continued to grow and develop our current ones.  It is with great joy that we share some of the highlights of 2015:

Speaker Series

APP_1746Our Speaker Series continued again this year and we had many wonderful and memorable experiences.  Marc Brown kicked off 2015 with a delightful presentation, complete with drawings of his famous Arthur characters!

James Patterson

James Patterson not only visited PSE, but he also made an incredible donation of 2,000 books to the school!

Other amazing speakers (pictured below) included:  Tom Chapin, Savion Glover, Rosemary Wells, Esmeralda Santiago, Donna Gephart, Chris Barton, Terrance Simien and the Zydeco Experience, Phil Bildner and Sonia Manzano.

Parent Speaker Series
In September, award-winning author Esmeralda Santiago kicked off a new Eli’s House program:  our Parent Speaker Series.

In October, we hosted former Mayor of Miami, Manny Diaz.  His talk was electric and inspiring to the parents of PSE.

Port Salerno Talks

FASA Award RecipientsOf all of our programs, Port Salerno Talks (PST) saw the most growth and recognition this year.

In June, PST was one of five programs awarded the 2014-2015 Little Red Schoolhouse Award by The Florida Association of School Administrators (FASA) and The Florida Association of Elementary and Middle School Principals (FAEMSP).

In June, Dr. Erika Hoff, nationally-known professor of psychology and director of the Language Development Lab at Florida Atlantic University, joined our Advisory Council.

In August, PST was invited to become a member of the Bridging the Word Gap National Research Network.

In September, PST was recognized as a Bright Spot in Hispanic Education by the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics.

In 2015 we also saw the first class of parents and caregivers graduate from PST!

Port Salerno Reads

APP_4528In December, we kicked off our our newest initiative, Port Salerno Reads, with Sonia Manzano.  Every first grade student at PSE received their own home library of books!

Arts in Education

savion-glover-answering-student-questionsIn February, in conjunction with The Lyric Theatre, we sponsored visits by the Ailey II dance company and Savion Glover to PSE.

Mr. Glover did a short performance and answered questions from the students.

The Ailey II dance company did a master class with some of the PSE students.

In October, Eli’s House sponsored our first artist-in-residence at PSE:  Patricia Greene.  She spent the week with the students creating Day of the Dead masks and discussing the culture and history behind the Day of the Dead.

PSE Garden

This year, the PSE Garden continued to grow!  In October, our edible schoolyard had a major work day (and expansion) where volunteers and PSE staff were joined by experts from the Home Depot of Stuart gardening department and Fred Burkey, Master Gardner from the University of Florida Martin County extension, and Paula Roberts.

Thank you for a wonderful year!  We look forward to 2016!
